Fifty fifty supports individuals through cycling and sailing. These two sports were not chosen by chance. They provide a way to shift focus away from one's body. “The advantage is that we focus on an object,” explains Nathalie Grubac. “Moreover, cycling and sailing do not require any prior physical condition. Anyone can practice them without being in top shape, which is often the case when coming out of a situation of violence.”
These sports also carry strong symbolic meanings. We “cast off the lines,” we “take the helm” of our lives, we “create distance” with sailing. Cycling is also a fantastic tool for regaining autonomy, providing a real skill that can help one find a job, for instance, by having a concrete means of getting there when one cannot afford a car.
Today, we know that sport is a tool for well-being, both physical and mental. “I built myself through sport,” shares the co-founder of the association. “I have gone through challenges and enhanced certain abilities, including the ability to rise from my failures and difficulties, through sport. It is a powerful and incredible tool for moving towards better well-being and for changing things.”
The association also works towards gender diversity. “We thought it was important for men and women to meet, so we made diversity a core issue and advocate for more diversity, particularly in the sports field,” concludes Nathalie Grubac.
