Drawing from his personal experience caring for his father with dementia, Pablo Mariñosa envisioned a parrot-shaped device that not only provides emotional companionship but also monitors vital signs and detects falls, offering peace of mind to family members through a mobile app.
“My father told me: ‘Buy me a parrot. It will take care of me, be with me, keep me company, we will talk, we will be together.' If my father asks me for the moon, I will bring him the moon, but a live physical parrot in the hospital was unthinkable,” Mariñosa recounts. Faced with the impossibility of bringing a parrot to the hospital, Pablo conceived the idea of creating a 3D-printed one with artificial intelligence to meet that need for interaction and companionship. A project his father never got to see, but which could help others in similar situations today.
The technology behind Onorato stands out for its focus on emotional technology, which includes emotion recognition and personalization through individualized training of the parrot. This inventive companion animal is even capable of detecting and mitigating fear in people, as well as anxiety, distress, or depression, with the aim of significantly improving the quality of life for seniors living alone.
