It was while installing solar panels on his own house in the south of France that Thomas Cautier had his epiphany. In 2022, he decided to create Sunethic with the ambition of enabling as many people as possible to produce their own electricity. While solar energy is gaining interest, several obstacles still hinder its adoption, such as a lack of trust in certain players in the sector, high prices, and solutions that are poorly adapted for renters.
To overcome these barriers, Sunethic offers DIY kits or installation services. Self-installation can reduce the investment cost by half or even by two-thirds. The company also provides mobile solar kits that renters can take with them when they move. It emphasizes transparency by prioritizing quality equipment, particularly panels made in France, and by presenting the manufacturing conditions of its products. Its largely digitized operations also help to keep costs down and offer more affordable solutions.
According to ADEME, the carbon footprint of panels made in France is twice as low as that of Chinese panels, thanks to the French electricity mix and reduced transportation. In terms of budget, a 500-watt panel could save between 100 and 125 euros per year, depending on the region. With four panels, savings can reach 40 to 50 euros per month, depending on the household's production and consumption.
The rising electricity prices are making these installations more attractive. For Thomas Cautier, the development of solar energy allows households to reduce their bills while contributing to the energy transition. He estimates that around one million homes are currently equipped in France, out of a total of 20 million, indicating significant potential for growth. The gradual decrease in equipment costs could also facilitate access to these solutions.
