Senology is a medical specialty that focuses on breast pathologies. "And I am a senologist in the sense that I provide rehabilitation after breast cancer,” explains Gwenaëlle Landrieu. It is through her work that she realizes some women face difficulties in continuing to engage in sports during and after their illness due to financial constraints.
Thus, the Phoenixea association aims to provide them with an annual subscription for the physical activity of their choice. Indeed, cancer puts women in precarious situations that are already complex. Those who are employed but lack advantageous collective agreements will not be able to receive daily allowances, often in jobs that are already undervalued. We also find women in self-employed professions. Most often, they have children. Not to mention that in 60% of cases, women undergoing cancer treatment are left by their partners, finding themselves solely responsible for the household. Ultimately, it is estimated that within two years following a cancer diagnosis, about 50% of women will lose half of their income.
This adds an additional stress on top of the already significant stress caused by the diagnosis, which does not help in coping. "That’s why we recommend physical activity,” explains Gwenaëlle Landrieu, “which helps to reduce fatigue, as well as all the pain related to various treatments.”
It also helps to limit recurrences. It restores morale and self-confidence. Moreover, exercise promotes better sleep and reduces stress. Physical activity helps decrease inflammation and blood sugar levels, factors that can actually favor the onset of cancer.
This is why Phoenixea also organizes prevention actions, particularly aimed at women living in priority neighborhoods who do not have the budget to engage in sports. Here, discovery workshops for various physical activities are organized, such as boxing, dance, macadam which is muscle strengthening using urban furniture, and Brazilian percussion, to get moving while also creating connections and cohesion.
“Through sports, Phoenixea enables women to strengthen themselves physically and mentally,” emphasizes Gwenaëlle Landrieu. “It truly anchors them in their bodies, allowing them to face difficult moments with courage. And physical activity really helps to enhance one’s self-worth, both personally and in the eyes of others.”
