Today, all figures are in billions. ”So one billion, yes, it's a lot. But at the same time, we need to learn to make that our unit of measurement,” explains Violaine Pierre.
The actors of the just transition are indeed the major forgotten ones in funding, for a variety of reasons related to the lack of understanding of their status, particularly for cooperatives, but also because their model, focused on the public interest, does not allow for capital to be compensated at the level expected by some funders.
The movement initiated by Opération Milliard has thus begun to develop to address this underfunding, joined by 1500 actors, including many leaders of organizations in the just transition, who have given themselves just over a year to co-construct the movement.
About twenty ambassadors are deployed in the territories to raise awareness of the operation, with 8 pilot locations, third places, social centers, MJC… aiming to reach 200 ambassadors by the end of the year - the position is open to anyone who wants to get involved on the operation's website.
So who will finance this just transition? Individuals, of course, but also existing actors who may not be funding enough today, for example, cooperatives or associations, as well as new funders, such as mutual insurance funds and pension funds whose mission is to serve the public interest in the long term.
“The understanding of the transition goes far beyond just the current technological issues,” states Violaine Pierre. “If we do not include social and democratic issues, we will not achieve this transition.”
