Philip Kösters, as a member of the management team, is primarily responsible for site development and the expansion of the association's network. During his visits to schools - each week at a different one in Germany - he observes changes and challenges where Chancenwerk can ideally offer support. Chancenwerk collaborates with other associations and also with politics to prepare the school system for the future and adapt it for children as a civil society actor.
"The school landscape in Germany is incredibly diverse." and "We need to rethink school." are the observations and solutions Philip sees in the education sector. Because academic performance in subject competencies has significantly declined in recent years. However, as Kösters explains, this does not apply to all schools and children at the same time. Chancenwerk aims to reduce this inequality. No one should wait for reforms; instead, change should happen now, as Kösters explains.
To achieve this, they have launched the learning cascade, which has been functioning ever since. Students provide tutoring to high school learners, who in turn tutor younger students. The system is based on "Older helps Younger." The weekly commitment typically lasts for two years. Philip Kösters notes that this not only has the advantage of reinforcing and solidifying knowledge but also reduces the barrier between older and younger students, allowing the group to develop social skills together, grow as a unit, and each member to gain experiences and a sense of self-efficacy.
