“Our work is a success story: we have managed to bring immigration and economy into the conversation, specifically through the regularization of foreign migrants. Suddenly, the focus has shifted from how people access Spain through irregular routes to discussing the labor rights of individuals in irregular situations. It’s a huge change,” says Rodríguez-Alarcón, although she believes there is still much to be done.
At the time of its emergence, the spread of false information in media and networks was not as powerful as it would become years later, although the impact that the internet could have on the transmission of fake news was already taking shape. “We have progressed in parallel to the growth of hate speech,” notes the director of Fundación Por Causa, whose work has been the basis for reports and information in media across Spain and America, and has also influenced policies.
