At 16, Sébastien Jallet dreamed of "serving France". Either by "joining the army, becoming a history teacher, or entering public service. Today, at 48, he has achieved his goals.
The role of a prefect comes with multiple responsibilities: "The figure of the prefects is known, but the specific missions they carry out are often much less so. […] I am in charge of two major series of missions. Security and crisis management […] and I implement major public policies down to the last mile (…) so missions on the ground and with a large number of partners," explains the senior official.
Ranked 75th in terms of population among French departments, Orne, rich in agricultural and industrial culture, is the least populated department in the Normandy region.
"It's like a small France, with all the challenges gathered in one department," specifies the prefect.
Economic management is at the heart of the prefecture's concerns: "It's about supporting business projects and actions for employment such as apprenticeships or youth engagement contracts, but also a defensive role, which is essential to prevent restructuring, help employees affected by economic layoffs, and support the territory in its reindustrialization efforts."
