Acting to deconstruct. That was the goal of Malo Lopez several years ago. To provide people with disabilities the opportunity to pursue a profession that values their differences. “We have placed the issue of disability at the heart of our plays, but we address it with humor. The actors speak best about it; they have transcended their disabilities, so it’s quite easy to give them a voice on the subject,” explains the founder of Insolite Fabriq.
Every year, ten professional actors perform pieces written and created for the occasion, aiming to raise awareness, educate, and most importantly, entertain.
One of their latest productions is an adaptation of one of the greatest classics in theater history: Romeo and Juliet, this time titled “Say it in one breath.” The goal, in addition to performing a classic, is to highlight the perspective of the actors on love: “It’s a subject that deeply affects them since it is very sensitive in their lives and families. And I felt that love has often been hindered or impossible.” explains Malo Lopez.
Thus, accompanied by Julien Pénichost, a trained videographer, they write a play that reflects the actors' stories, their reflections, and their sincerity. “It turns out that Juliet in the troupe is played by Diyé, who has also experienced difficult things. We even tried to arrange a marriage for her, so it resonated so much,” asserts the director.
The objective is, of course, to shift perspectives through awareness: “When we go to a school and talk to the children, there are powerful questions. And we think, ‘this one will grow up differently.’ At least, he might be able to play with friends who have disabilities because his perspective will have changed.”
