How can we give every young person the same opportunities to shape their future when social background, where they live, learning difficulties or a lack of professional networks can still influence their educational and career paths?
Across Europe, entrepreneurs and organisations are experimenting with new ways of addressing these challenges.
European education systems face several challenges at the same time.
Children need to learn how to read, write and reason, as well as develop the skills they will need in the future. But they also need to understand their own abilities, discover different careers, access the right educational opportunities and develop the skills they need to find their place in a changing economy.
These challenges are closely connected.
A child who loses confidence in their abilities may gradually disengage from school. A student facing learning difficulties without adequate support may fall behind. A young person who is unfamiliar with the range of careers available to them may limit their options. A student without a professional network may find it harder to turn a degree into a first professional experience.
Inequalities can therefore reinforce one another at every stage.
Yet solutions already exist.
In France, Spain, Germany and the United King
dom, entrepreneurs and organisations are developing new approaches to build confidence, improve learning, promote digital inclusion, support career guidance, widen access to higher education and facilitate the transition into employment.
Here are ten approaches showing how Europe can rethink equal opportunities in education.

1. Build confidence from an early age
Academic success does not begin and end with school results.
It also starts with how children see themselves as learners.
This is the starting point for Coup de Pouce. For 40 years, the organisation has worked to address educational inequalities, developing extracurricular programmes with education researchers.
The aim is not to replicate school after school hours.

Play is an important part of this approach. By working in small groups, children can experiment, express themselves and try new things without being afraid of failure.

Learning difficulties can emerge in the first years of education and have a lasting impact on a child's trajectory. According to parents and teachers surveyed by Coup de Pouce, 96% of participating children gained confidence in their ability to succeed.
The organisation also seeks to build a support network around each child by bringing together families, teachers, facilitators and local authorities.
The idea is simple: do not wait for a child to disengage from school before taking action.

2. Detect learning difficulties earlier

Neurekalab says its tools have been scientifically validated and claims that its interventions can triple the performance of students with dyslexia or dyscalculia within four months.
The goal is therefore not to replace teachers, but to give them better information.
When a difficulty is identified earlier, support can also begin earlier.

This approach addresses an important question for European education: how can we prepare young people for a working world in which they will probably need to keep learning and adapting throughout their careers?

6. Give every young person access to professional networks
Career choices do not depend solely on academic results.
They also depend on the information young people have access to.
A child from a highly educated family may easily have a parent, neighbour or family friend who can explain what a particular job involves, help them find an internship or introduce them to a company.
Not everyone has access to that kind of network.
In France, JobIRL seeks to reduce this gap by connecting young people with professionals.
The organisation has 180,000 active members and also runs programmes in priority neighbourhoods and rural areas.
Young people can talk to professionals, discover different careers, receive guidance and look for internships or apprenticeships.
The results show the potential of this approach. In the middle and high schools supported by JobIRL, 80% of students say they discovered careers they were previously unaware of, while 93% say they feel more motivated to work on their career plans after meeting professionals.
Mentoring can also provide support at key moments in a young person's journey.
The goal is ultimately simple: to ensure that a lack of family connections does not limit a young person's opportunities.

7. Connect universities with the real world
The transition from education to employment is another critical stage.
Many students graduate with theoretical knowledge but little practical experience of the challenges companies actually face.
In Spain, U4Impact seeks to build this connection before students even graduate.
The platform connects companies and students so that students can complete their final undergraduate or master's projects around real-world challenges faced by organisations.
A company identifies a specific need. The student then applies their knowledge to develop a response.
The model creates a win-win situation.
Students gain their first professional experience and can demonstrate what they are capable of in a real-world context. Companies benefit from an external perspective and can identify emerging talent.
U4Impact has worked with more than 500 students, over 200 companies and 60 universities.
According to data provided by the organisation, participating students have an employability rate 300% higher six months after graduation.
The initiative shows how part of the transition between education and employment can be built before students even receive their degree.
Key idea: Bringing universities and businesses closer together can turn academic projects into first professional experiences.

8. Give talented students access to top universities
Academic performance alone does not always guarantee access to the best opportunities.
Social background can also play a role.
In the United Kingdom, Zero Gravity works with young people from less advantaged backgrounds to help them access the country's most selective universities.
The organisation addresses an issue that goes beyond tuition fees: some young people do not have access to the same information, networks or role models as those who grow up in families already familiar with these universities.
Mentoring can help bridge this gap.
Professionals and students support young people with their choices, applications and educational journeys.
The goal is not to create an opportunity artificially.
It is to ensure that young people with the potential to access certain educational opportunities do not rule themselves out simply because they have never imagined that those opportunities were within their reach.

The organisation was founded by Matteo Bergamini in response to challenges including disinformation, radicalisation and conspiracy theories.
Its approach is designed to help young people develop the skills they need to analyse information, understand how manipulation works and participate more effectively in democratic life.
This is becoming increasingly important as young people are exposed to growing amounts of information online.
Education is therefore no longer simply about learning how to find information.
It is also about learning how to determine whether information is reliable, understand where it comes from and identify the mechanisms that can shape our perceptions.
For Shout Out UK, this education needs to start at school.
Key idea: Learning how to assess and understand information has become an essential skill for fully participating in society.

10. Turn potential into professional opportunities
Equal opportunities do not end when young people leave school or university.
Some then encounter other barriers: limited financial resources, a lack of professional networks, the cost of workspace or difficulty accessing specialised support.
In the United Kingdom, Launch It seeks to address these challenges for young entrepreneurs from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The organisation starts from a simple observation: starting a business often requires more than a good idea.
Entrepreneurs need to be able to afford workspace, access specialist advice and build a network that can help their business grow.
For some young entrepreneurs, these resources are much harder to access than for others.
Launch It therefore seeks to reduce these barriers by combining access to workspace with tailored support.
The model extends the question of equal opportunities beyond the education system.
A young person may have the skills and ambition needed to start a business. They still need access to the resources that can turn that ambition into a viable activity.
Key idea: Equal opportunities should also give young people the means to turn their skills into professional opportunities.
Ten approaches, one European challenge
These ten initiatives operate at different stages of the journey.
Coup de Pouce works from the earliest years to build confidence in learning. Neurekalab seeks to identify difficulties earlier. Tekman focuses on transforming teaching practices. These approaches do not represent a single model for European education.
Rather, they show that equal opportunities are shaped at many different points along a person's journey.
It starts with the confidence we develop in our own abilities.
It then depends on our ability to learn, but also on our ability to identify difficulties and access the right support.
It continues when the time comes to choose an educational path or career.
At that point, opportunities depend on the information available, the networks a young person can access and their ability to imagine themselves in environments they may not be familiar with.
Finally, equal opportunities continue beyond education, when young people need to turn their skills into employment, a project or a professional activity.
These different dimensions are therefore interconnected.
A young person can achieve good academic results without knowing what careers those results could lead to.
They can know about those careers without having access to the network they need to secure an internship.
They can attend a good university without having the same resources as their peers to prepare for entering the labour market.
And they can have a promising business idea without having the resources needed to turn it into a company.
Education is therefore not only about transmitting knowledge.
It is also about giving young people the means to understand their options, develop their skills, make informed choices and turn those choices into opportunities.
The initiatives presented here come from France, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom.
They do not all address the same challenges, and their models cannot necessarily be transferred directly from one country to another.
But they share a common belief: our trajectories are not entirely determined by the circumstances into which we are born. The right learning conditions, tools and connections can open up new possibilities.
Europe does not need to invent every solution from scratch.
Some of those solutions already exist.
The challenge now is to make them better known, connect them and enable more young people to benefit from them.
